New Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn trailer goes exploring

At the beginning of this week the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn team flew all the way from San Francisco to London for the next leg of their press tour. We grabbed Naoki Yoshida (Game Director and Producer) hours after he landed for a quick interview which you can expect to hear more about in the coming weeks.

Although he was kept extremely busy while he was here, he made sure not to leave our readers empty-handed. This latest trailer explores the breath-taking world of Eorzea, complemented by the stunning visuals you've come to expect from Final Fantasy games. But we'll let you into a little secret... this is actually a video of the A Realm Reborn benchmark software that you'll soon be able to download!

That's not all that Yoshi-P had to share! This next video comprehensively explains how the new gamepad controls work. To put it simply; it's genius. It's so easy to use that this might replace traditional keyboard and mouse gameplay as we know it.

Like what you see then don't forget to register for the beta and check back regularly for more news.

Absolutely gorgeous. Have been running the benchmark on my PC a couple of times just to soak up the atmosphere :) I must admit, I was somewhat dubious about returning to this game, but having read and seen the changes made by the developers (folks with most excellent attitudes), I can say that I will definitely be coming back.

Hi all,

First of it, I want to say thank you all, for the Amazing FF series, I have play All and still love them all.
I come in regards the gamepad video and see if I can create impact on it.  Of course out of desesrespect.
I have been playing with a gamepad since the start of the FFXIV, and disagree a little in the configuration set for the Realm Reborn, so I come via this way see if I can get some changes in it, LOL.
Let’s Started:
The game pad will have to modes, Passive mode and active mode on these modes the configuration it will change. And it will be for play station control & PC* (I have the Xbox control in it; it works with all PC’s).
We will start with Passive mode.
Configuration:
Joystick 1: Characters movement
L3: Sprint
Joystick2: Head movement (Invert or not)
R3: First Person View
Up/down/Left/Right Pad (UDLRp): Up pad: target Only Party member following by character name in screen set. Down pad: All Enemies, starting by the nears one in screen view. Left/Right pad: target all. (This is for passive mode and active* (* UDLRp only for menu or target function, I disagree in the video for Functions in battle, Sorry).
X (Blue) or A (green) Button: Select/interact with Objects activation/NPC Conversations
Square (Pink) or X(Blue): Action/Passive mode
Triangle (Green) or Y (Yellow): Jump
Circle (Red) or B (Red): Unselect Target

The fallowing is attached to Macros set...
L1 (Alt1 Left): None attacking Magic’s or Actions (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)
L2 (CTRL1 Left): Wave, Bow...all movements for Social... (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)

R1 (Alt1 Right): 2 Set Non Attacking Magic’s or Actions (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)
R2 (CTRL1 Right): 2 Set Wave, Bow...all movements for Social... (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)
Start Button: Menu
Select Button: Map

Action Mode: Weapon in Hand
Joystick’s in same configuration...

Up/down/Left/Right Pad (UDLRp): some functions, except when pressing triangle button Open Macros set (CTRL/ALT) to choose from set 1, 2, 3, by Pressing L1 or L2 you will choose CTRL or ALT.... Press triangle to close it or X to Use an action.

X (Blue) or A(green) Button: Lock Target/ attack
Square (Pink) or X(Blue): Action/Passive mode
Triangle (Green) or Y (Yellow): Macros Selection Menu (CTRL/ALT) 1, 2, 3....
Circle (Red) or B (Red): Unselect/Unlocking Target/ Stop Attacking

The fallowing is attached to Macros set...
L1 (Alt1 Left): None attacking Magic’s or Actions (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)
L2 (CTRL1 Left): Will Use all Weapon skills or attacking Magic’s set in macros (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)

R1 (Alt1 Right): 2 Set Non Attacking Magic’s or Actions (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)
R2 (CTRL1 Right): Will Use all Weapon skills or attacking Magic’s set in macros (X, Square, Triangle, Circle...)

Start Button: Menu
Select Button: Map

Peewee that was long  I hope I make sense out of it. It works excellent and this will allow you to have the same macros set up, but I will explain a little.

Macros set:
L1 (ALT Left): Macro1=Square...
Macro2=Triangle...
Macro3=X...
Macro4=Circle...
L2(ALT Right): Macro5= Square...
Macro6=Triangle...
Macro7=X...
Macro8= Circle....

For CTRL: it will be the same... This will cover all 8 macros set.  and u don’t need to use (UDLRp) for any action and it has been working well good because it is a set most games use... or configurations I have been using for most games.

Any way I hope FF team have time to read my little* comment hehehe.
For any further enquiries please sent me an email : bruno_sequeira@hotmail.co.uk
OH! I hope I didn’t forget any function, but you guys will be ok.
I have applied for Beta... but unfortunately I forgot to do the survey... 
But I will wait ...
I see you all soon

Have fun
@Tanthalas Thanks for the youtube video cause it looks amazing.
The ps3 version has some framerate issues but if it's only 75% optimized and it already looks way better then XIII both in scope of the map and in world detail I can only expect good things when the game finally releases.
Though I did read on Gamer Escape that the PS3 version is supposed to be only 75% optimized, so hopefully the frame rate and screen tear issues will be fixed before release.
@Mad_Angel

What do you mean about "rendered locally" the benchmark? The PC will always be able to outperform the PS3.

There's actually a 3rd video out there that Ben didn't post that you can watch from the official ARR website, this is the youtube link for it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=f0CPRyV7yNw

Its annoying that the only video with PS3 gameplay on it doesn't have a 1080p version, but you can clearly see how the PC segments of the video are a lot better looking. The PS3 version has a very notable hit to the frame rate and the lower resolution is definitely noticeable. Both XIII and XIII-2 look better than ARR based on this video.

Still, my laptop could only get 2900ish on the benchmark on medium settings, so its very likely that the PS3 version will look better than my laptop so I'll be playing on that.
@Enkidoh Yeah, I know but this is "A Realm Reborn" after all so I was afraid SE would throw away everything we love about FF and reinvent the franchise to please next gen gamers, like they did with FFXIII. Talking about FFXIII, after seeing XIV rendered locally, I must say XIII's graphics didn't age well...
The best thing about the controller video was that they showed we would have free movement. I was afraiad that we were going to be stuck with controls similar to Skyrim.
@Mad_Angel: courels, malboros and dragoons were all in the original version of FFXIV incidentally. ;) But yeah, the reborn Eorzea looks beautiful to behold in that video (although seeing Ifrit in his new Primal form tearing that party apart doesn't fill me with much confidence! :p)

After watching the exploration video through to the end a little mystery from the original version of FFXIV looks to be resolved - Ul'dah's legendary long-lost 'twin' city Sil'dih is shown as the 'Sil'dih Excavation Site' in that video - why do I get the feeling that's going to be a high-level raid dungeon?

Anyway, this is looking awesome. :D
Wow that footage looks amazing and I love the soundtrack! Can't wait to see it running locally on my pc.
I'm pleasantly surprised, though, to see expansive areas and a lot of throwbacks to previous FF games (the coeurls, the malboros, the dragon knight, ...) because SE's last decisions made me thought next gen gamers appreciated more long corridors and a complete departure from FF staples.
